The Path - "Defiance" - Season 2 Episode 11 Recap and Review

March 30, 2017

Source: Hulu

It looks like this episode piggy-backed off the last one. It wasn’t the most jam packed with action, but a few important things took place. We start by seeing more of the aftermath from Eddie finding out about Sarah and Cal. And I have to admit, I did cheer out loud when Eddie confronted Cal. He said everything that he knew would rock Cal’s world. Sarah settled for him, and Steve chose Eddie to lead when he claimed Cal was a disappointment; ouch. I was shocked to see that Noa took Cal’s side when she overheard the showdown between Cal and Eddie. I actually thought she was smart, but I guess not. Hawk would be much better off with Ashley, but, of course Cal convinced him she chose a house over him. Which we know isn’t really how it happened.

Source: Hulu

Yet again I was disappointed with Hawk. Even with the truth laid out in front of him he still chooses, in my opinion, the wrong side. He continues to stand up against Eddie and take the side of the movement, even while knowing they just jumped his dad. And for him to even suggest his dad brought it upon himself? Wow. That was a punch to the gut, just as his comment about his mom choosing Cal over his dad was.

And we see yet another idiot choose Cal over what would be better for them: Mary. Just as I suspected she would, she waits until the last moment to take off and not leave the movement. But running into the woods alone when you’re ready to give birth at any moment? She even surprised me with her stupidity with that move.

Source: Hulu

Speaking of stupid moves, Agent Gaines finally cracked. I can’t believe he told Eddie who he really was. I’m sure it’s all a part of his plan to shut down the movement, but dang. He put himself in a very risky position to be outed to the rest of the movement. Even if Eddie isn’t an active member, he still talks to Richard and Felicia, as well as Sarah’s dad. So it’s not that far-fetched for him to tell one of them who Gaines really is. Though, I can’t say he will. As Gaines can help end the corruption in the movement and help Eddie become the rightful Guardian of the Light. I guess we will have to see which way he goes with that information.

Source: Hulu

But, speaking of leaking information: Eddie got caught up in the moment when confronted by Sarah. I can’t blame him for his outburst, and loved seeing him lay into her. Because, as I am sure you all have picked up on, I am not #TeamSarah at all. But when he nearly verbatim read back to her the confession for restitution she wrote; that gave things away. She then knew someone within the movement was working with him. And that lead to her discovery of the room that they were holding Eddie’s training. And when she opened the door and found Felicia. Yikes. This is not going to go well for her, or Richard. I just hope this doesn’t mean they’ll be kicked out…

Source: Hulu

And can we talk about that crazy dream Cal had with Steve? He is being haunted in life and in sleep, knowing Eddie was right. I have to admit I love watching Cal crack. But part of me is still wondering if what Cal’s mom said about Steve molesting Cal is true. This vision hints to the fact that it very well could be. Steve insists he is helping Cal by drawing flowers on his walls of doom. And that kind of sounds like a creepy thing someone would say to a kid they were taking advantage of. And that creepy song playing over the scene, “Papa’s gonna buy you…” and how intimate Steve’s posture was over top of Cal kind of drives the possibility home. It causes me to wonder if we'll ever truly find out. It’s not out of the realm of possibility in a cult setting for the person in power to abuse their power in that way. And judging by the way Cal acts towards Mary, and what Sarah had said to Cal about a possible abuser targeting Mary, it makes it even more plausible. I hope we don’t end this season with a cliffhanger and get some of these questions answered. But at this point, we need to wait and see.

The Walking Dead - "The Other Side" - Season 7 Episode 14 - Review

March 25, 2017

Source: AMC

Life in Hilltop continues on as normal, people going about their day, farming, spending time with one another, and also training in knife throwing and hand to hand combat.  The duration of the quiet preparation to go to war with Negan is informed by Maggie’s continued checkups on her growing baby.  All the while, Gregory begins to worry about his place as a leader, and Rosita and Sasha agree on their suicide mission.

Source: AMC

Sasha has certainly become an integral part of Hilltop, along with Maggie.  Their friendship with Jesus is symbolic of the reason why everyone has chosen to fight.  There are good things that the Saviors will eventually stomp on if they aren’t stopped.  And the question each character must ask themselves, is that if those good things are worth dying for.  For Rosita and Sasha, that question is answered for them when the Saviors arrive unexpectedly, and they’re forced to sneak away and start their mission a bit early.

Source: AMC

As Simon does his usual schtick, Maggie and Daryl hide in a cellar.  Their cover is nearly blown and Maggie sees that Daryl has an odd bloodlust, perhaps because he blames himself (rightfully) for getting Glenn killed.  It’s here that she forgives him, mostly because of Glenn’s opinion of him.  It’s a moment that’s been a long time coming but it doesn’t have as much impact as it could have.

Source: AMC

The Saviors’ purpose in Hilltop puts a cinch in the war effort.  Being that Negan tossed his doctor in a furnace, Harlan becomes suddenly needed in Sanctuary.  Not only will Maggie no longer have pre-natal care but allowing their only doctor to be taken without much protest will make Gregory look very weak in the eyes of the people.  In his own backwards, self-serving way, he tries to reason with Simon, to no avail.

Source: AMC

Meanwhile Sasha and Rosita go on the least fun hike ever, with Rosita’s bad bitch act continuing to be grating.  Surely the two don’t have much to talk about in one respect, but eventually their reasons for loving Abraham ultimately becomes common ground.  Rosita reveals she’s somewhat of a Sarah Connor type character who allied herself with anyone along the way who could teach her something, but never realizing her potential as an equal.  Abraham was the first to really see that she was just as much a warrior as himself.  And although it didn’t work out in the end, seeing him happy with Sasha was no reason for Rosita to hate her.  Their understanding of each other and of the kind of man Abraham was brought them to this point.  From a vantage point in an abandoned building, they see a few things that complicate their assassination attempt.

Source: AMC

First, they see that Eugene is comfortable in his role but don’t realize he’s not bluffing.  Then they see that Dr. Carson is now a resident of Sanctuary.  With too much at risk, they decide that an infiltration, assassination and extraction is necessary.  While Eugene refuses to go with his rescuers, Dr. Carson still needs saving.  Oddly, Sasha decides to halve her already shitty survival odds by blocking Rosita’s way in and rushing into Sanctuary alone.  I’m all for going out like a hero and saving your friends’ lives, but when you won’t get within a mile of your intended target without some kind of help, you’re stupidly throwing your life away and dying at the hands of a grunt at best or being captured and tortured at worst.  But hey, this show is full of people with strange decision making skills.  As Rosita retreats in tears, a shadowy figure comes to her aid.

Source: AMC

A two person suicide mission that became a one person assault, doomed to failed, perhaps just became a two person rescue mission that is also doomed to fail.  As someone else pointed out, these new developments assure that the next few episodes will be spent on this foolhardy endeavor and we won’t see all-out war until next season.

The Path - "Restitution" - Season 2 Episode 10 - Recap and Review

March 25, 2017

Source: Hulu

To be honest, I didn’t feel like much happened in this week’s episode. Yes, we see Tessa confront her family. That was kind of big. After all, it seemed to really open up Sarah’s mother to the idea of talking to her again. We found out Sarah’s big secret: That she almost left with Tessa when she left the movement. We also see Hawk struggling once again with his feelings for Ashley and his place in the movement. And we see Gaines gain ground on with his case against Sarah. Other than Eddie finding out about Cal and Sarah hooking up, that’s really all the big stuff that happened.

In this episode we did finally get to see Ashley confess to Hawk why she left him. And instead of being mad at Cal he chooses to not believe it, and abandon Ashley. Ouch.  I mean he knows in his heart she is right and Cal isn’t the man that he portrays himself to be, so it’s frustrating to me he doesn’t trust that instinct. Instead Hawk chooses to punish himself for missing their restitution ceremony and submit himself to be cleansed. I can only hope that during his time in seclusion he sees the real truth, and forgives Ashley. I still believe she will be the key to getting Hawk on his father’s side.

We already see that Sarah’s father is in support of Eddie. And Summer is too. Summer being as young and impressionable as she is, still cares for her father deeply and doesn’t seem to care she has to sneak to see him. She is just happy that she can see him. But Eddie is still struggling. He has no clue what direction to go. He is still doing training with Felicia and Richard, but feels he’s not worthy of leading the movement. I think that doubt is what makes him an even better leader. Unlike Cal who thinks he’s God’s gift, and Sarah who makes the stupidest decisions ever.

I was happy to see that Richard knew he needed to give Eddie an extra push to make sure he stuck with what they were doing. Richard knows Eddie needs to lead the movement, as it was Steve’s will. But with Eddie doubting himself, Richard had to play dirty. So when Richard pocketed Sarah’s box from the restitution ceremony with her confession about sleeping with Cal, it was just what he needed to know he needs to step in and help the movement. He needs to stop Cal, and Sarah. If only Eddie knew just how deep a hole Sarah has dug herself into. He thinks it’s just the Cal slip up. He has no idea she made choices that could bury the entire movement. Only Gaines, the FBI, Cal, and the people she blackmailed know. And pretty soon her dirty little secret will be exposed. One could only hope that somehow Cal gets buried too. Because I will be very salty if I invest all this time into this show just to see the creepiest character get off scot free.

Is it mean if I hope that the truth comes out about Cal and Sarah’s affair and it turns everyone against them? Because I really hope it does. We already see Mary, who is always “Team Cal” pulling away. So that gives me hope that others may start to see the light as well. No pun intended. I can’t help but wonder if Mary really will leave the movement with Sean or if she’s just saying she will. I guess we will have to wait and find out.

One thing I was wondering about is the whole Clarksville thing. We learned that Marshall the farmer died. But Hawk, who was very passionate about helping them still has no clue. I wonder if he is going to find out in the next episode, or if he will even care at this point. I mean, Hawk is kind of going through his own stuff at the moment. But I can only hope that if he does find out about it that it will be an extra push for him to see the movement for what it is. Can you imagine if both Hawk and Summer side with Eddie? That would be ideal. I mean Sarah is going to be sitting in a jail cell soon, so I’m sure they’d go with him. Unless of course they have no choice but to stay in the movement since the “Denier” policy is still in place. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out. I really can’t wait to see Sarah and Cal crash and burn, and I am sure I am not the only one.
