The Walking Dead - "The Other Side" - Season 7 Episode 14 - Review

March 25, 2017

Source: AMC

Life in Hilltop continues on as normal, people going about their day, farming, spending time with one another, and also training in knife throwing and hand to hand combat.  The duration of the quiet preparation to go to war with Negan is informed by Maggie’s continued checkups on her growing baby.  All the while, Gregory begins to worry about his place as a leader, and Rosita and Sasha agree on their suicide mission.

Sasha has certainly become an integral part of Hilltop, along with Maggie.  Their friendship with Jesus is symbolic of the reason why everyone has chosen to fight.  There are good things that the Saviors will eventually stomp on if they aren’t stopped.  And the question each character must ask themselves, is that if those good things are worth dying for.  For Rosita and Sasha, that question is answered for them when the Saviors arrive unexpectedly, and they’re forced to sneak away and start their mission a bit early.

As Simon does his usual schtick, Maggie and Daryl hide in a cellar.  Their cover is nearly blown and Maggie sees that Daryl has an odd bloodlust, perhaps because he blames himself (rightfully) for getting Glenn killed.  It’s here that she forgives him, mostly because of Glenn’s opinion of him.  It’s a moment that’s been a long time coming but it doesn’t have as much impact as it could have.

The Saviors’ purpose in Hilltop puts a cinch in the war effort.  Being that Negan tossed his doctor in a furnace, Harlan becomes suddenly needed in Sanctuary.  Not only will Maggie no longer have pre-natal care but allowing their only doctor to be taken without much protest will make Gregory look very weak in the eyes of the people.  In his own backwards, self-serving way, he tries to reason with Simon, to no avail.

Meanwhile Sasha and Rosita go on the least fun hike ever, with Rosita’s bad bitch act continuing to be grating.  Surely the two don’t have much to talk about in one respect, but eventually their reasons for loving Abraham ultimately becomes common ground.  Rosita reveals she’s somewhat of a Sarah Connor type character who allied herself with anyone along the way who could teach her something, but never realizing her potential as an equal.  Abraham was the first to really see that she was just as much a warrior as himself.  And although it didn’t work out in the end, seeing him happy with Sasha was no reason for Rosita to hate her.  Their understanding of each other and of the kind of man Abraham was brought them to this point.  From a vantage point in an abandoned building, they see a few things that complicate their assassination attempt.

Source: AMC

First, they see that Eugene is comfortable in his role but don’t realize he’s not bluffing.  Then they see that Dr. Carson is now a resident of Sanctuary.  With too much at risk, they decide that an infiltration, assassination and extraction is necessary.  While Eugene refuses to go with his rescuers, Dr. Carson still needs saving.  Oddly, Sasha decides to halve her already shitty survival odds by blocking Rosita’s way in and rushing into Sanctuary alone.  I’m all for going out like a hero and saving your friends’ lives, but when you won’t get within a mile of your intended target without some kind of help, you’re stupidly throwing your life away and dying at the hands of a grunt at best or being captured and tortured at worst.  But hey, this show is full of people with strange decision making skills.  As Rosita retreats in tears, a shadowy figure comes to her aid.

Source: AMC

A two person suicide mission that became a one person assault, doomed to failed, perhaps just became a two person rescue mission that is also doomed to fail.  As someone else pointed out, these new developments assure that the next few episodes will be spent on this foolhardy endeavor and we won’t see all-out war until next season.

The Walking Dead - "Hearts Still Beating" - Season 7 Episode 8 Review

December 13, 2016

In general, regardless of how I felt about this episode, I think I’m done with mid-season finales.  The end of season six was more of an insult than a tease, and while the premiere of season seven was strong and awesome in the worst way, these past few episodes have really killed that momentum.  As all roads lead to war, we’re going to take another break, just to give an already bored audience a chance to finally check out.  Or are the morsels juicy enough to keep us trudging forward?

Source: AMC

So far, Maggie and Sasha (with Enid) are the darlings of Hilltop for their quick thinking during the ghetto blaster Gremlin assault last time, perhaps even on their way to dethroning Gregory.  Michonne and Isabelle, her perhaps escapee Savior hostage, take a trip to Sanctuary and Michonne gets a rude awakening about the scale of what they’re up against, but it does not change her will to fight.  We check in on Carol, who gets visits from both Morgan and Richard.  Morgan is making more of a social call, to see that she’s already well taken care of by Ezekiel.  Richard meets with them to urge them to urge Ezekiel to strike against the Saviors, not knowing just how outnumbered they are.  Carol wants none of it, indeed she seemed quite happy with her log fire and book.  Of course, news of what’s happened to Rick and friends has not reached her…

Source: AMC

Daryl’s mystery benefactor slipped him a key and he finally makes his escape, as Negan is at Alexandria and guard duty is considerably more lax.  But not before running into Jesus and beating Fat Joey to death, perhaps the one Savior we might have had sympathy for, but Daryl makes a good point:  every Savior takes.  It’s not about getting by or surviving, it’s about taking it all.  Thus, the bludgeon.

Source: AMC

Negan is a passionate cook and makes a lovely spaghetti dinner for Carl and Olivia and Rick, but Rick’s off scavenging with Aaron.  In a powerful metaphor for the show’s ratings as of late, the two paddle a sinking boat over to the hoarder’s houseboat.  They find a considerable stash of weapons (with no ammo) and a cryptic note for whosoever finds the treasure.  It’s this note that Rick pores over at the end of the episode when he and Michonne agree that they need to fight back.

Source: AMC

What made Rick decide that enough was enough, after perhaps two visits from the Saviors?  Not including the premiere, we have kicked around bullshit, going from settlement to settlement to check in on characters and tell stories we only kind of cared about, supposedly showing the reach and savagery of Negan and his goon squad but never really reaching the intensity and fear achieved back out on that lonely road.  In actuality, things haven’t gotten too bad for Rick and company, brainings not withstanding, in the timeline of the season.  But when Spencer makes a power play in front of the citizens of Alexandria to Negan, to have Rick removed and he installed as the leadership of the settlement, and Negan rightly guts him for being a snake in the grass, THAT was the tipping point.  One of the most unliked characters in the last few seasons gets killed and that’s what makes things too much to bear.  Very stupidly and against Father Gabriel’s sound fucking advice to fight as a team, Rosita takes a pot shot at Negan.  She manages to miss at an embarrassingly close range and instead hits Lucille, who is apparently bulletproof.  She completely blows the foundry secret wide open and probably sets back the war efforts in a massive way, gets Olivia shot in the face, gets Eugene kidnapped and herself almost killed for the equivalent of a Tinder mistake.  A mistake she was about to make again, if only Spencer saw the real opportunity.  A lust for power over beauty was his undoing, and I was happy to see him go.

Source: AMC

I would rather believe that Rick decided the Saviors needed wholesale slaughter when he saw Aaron being beaten.  Admittedly I was tense during the final fourth of the episode because I knew what was coming for Spencer but Negan did a great job of playing coy and cool until it was time to get messy, and I knew he had Olivia’s card the moment she messed up the weapon inventory, and I was really worried for both Rosita and Eugene.  But after Aaron explains his logic for helping Rick scavenge where others disagreed with bowing down, that as long as the hearts of those they love are beating anything is bearable, seeing him take a thrashing was the most difficult thing to watch.  It was senseless, excessive, and did well to remind us that the Saviors are a bunch of gargantuan fuckers.

Source: AMC

After the dust clears, our remaining heroes journey to Hilltop to reunite with Maggie, Sasha, Jesus and Daryl.  It’s a feel-good moment to see everyone hug it out, and for Rick to tell Maggie she was right to want war.  These characters are only good for ruining anything in their path.  They are murderous nutjobs, but they at least have loyalty to one another and the show works best when they’re shooting people and watching each other’s backs.  The mid-season finale takes a huge step toward getting back to that, only to stand still for a few weeks.  It’s frustrating.  But until then, we have a montage scene of our heroes smiling at one another, each knowing that they will use their unimaginable trauma to fuel what will hopefully be a spectacular display of carnage.

Another heartwarming tidbit was seeing Maggie in a ball cap and fingerless gloves, perhaps an homage to fallen loved ones...

But did you see the spooky boot, belonging to someone watching Aaron and Rick make off with the goods from the boat?  DUN DUN DUN...

The Walking Dead - "Sing Me a Song" - Season 7 Episode 7

December 7, 2016

Fuck it, let’s just have every character try to weasel their way into Sanctuary and take out Negan.  We’ll have subplots to last for two more seasons.  Jesus and Carl are already there, but Michonne wants in on the action, as does Rosita.  The odds of any of their plans working out are somewhere between abysmal and embarrassing, but let’s watch them run around for a bit, moaning about fighting back.

Source: AMC

Carl has made it further inside Sanctuary than anyone else, and Negan’s soft spot for him keeps him alive for the time being.  It’s another Daryl moment, where a character survives some really idiotic choices, in this case, because Negan admires their spunk and/or plot armor.  One might think seeing Negan take it easy on not one but TWO members of Alexandria with little consequence would sow the seeds of doubt in his men, but he is still the fearsome leader who takes no shit.

Source: AMC

Most of the episode is spent seeing Carl and Negan hang out.  Negan bullies and threatens Carl a bit but it’s mostly a weird form of bonding.  Sure, he’s a murderous animal whose lust for power has destroyed dozens of lives, if not more, but I’m sure the guy gets lonely.  He has gathered women and subjugated men, but he doesn’t have anyone that looks up to him.  While Carl doesn’t exactly hate hanging out with Negan, neither is he impressed by his lifestyle.

Source: AMC

We also get to see a little more into the way life is in Sanctuary.  Negan has his own little harem, but he insists he’s married to all of them.  Even the end of the world cannot break the sanctity of marriage it seems.  It’s touched on that most if not all of these women are his against their will, and that they may have husbands or boyfriends that they arrived with, but we don’t really delve into the nitty gritty of whether or not Negan is raping these women (he is) because he’s just so damn charming.  Here the villain gets in the way of the villainy.  We are nowhere near as uncomfortable as we should be with this whole arrangement, even when Negan punishes one of his wives by disfiguring her boyfriend with a hot iron.  We get a glimpse of the creed of the Saviors but it feels more like a justification of brutality than the manifest destiny of bringing order back to the world.

Source: AMC

Once again, nothing really happens in this episode until Carl threatens Negan, which prompts him to take Carl back to Alexandria, where he helps himself to the domestic lifestyle while they wait for Rick to come back.  I know it’s supposed to be ominous and threatening, watching him bully Olivia and cuddle with Judith, but by now we know all of Negan’s bravado left and right.  His shit talking is boring but constant violence and brutality would be exhausting so I don’t see a middle road there.  We’ll see how things go on the midseason finale.

Source: AMC

Meanwhile, Rick and Aaron may have stumbled upon a cache of goods hidden in the middle of a lake.  Spencer also came into some goodies but seems a little too eager to give them up to the Saviors.  Michonne tries to find her own way to Negan, giving the lone assassin horse another good thump, as I’ve said.  Rosita slaps Eugene around enough for him to make her one bullet (swat that horse one more time) and their exchange is pretty cringe worthy.  I get where they’re both coming from but the writing just isn’t there.  The one bullet idea is so stupid that no good argument about it can be extruded.

Source: AMC

At least we dealt with more than one or two characters in more than one location.  Hopefully we can get decently set up for all-out war next week, because we’ve only got so many episodes to unite the groups, begin production and take the fight to Negan.  Or maybe we can check back in with Hilltop...
