Supernatural - "Byzantium" - Season 14 Episode 8 Review

By Kaylynn Kasandra

Holy bananas, I feel like so much happened, yet, so little. The episode starts with Jack dying. I can’t say I thought that would happen this soon. But, in true Winchester fashion, the guys were able to figure out a way to get Jack back. They called on Lily: “the angel killing psycho” as Dean calls her. She said she had magick that could help Jack if he was willing to give up a piece of his soul. Something the guys were way too eager to agree to. Of course she tried to change her mind until Dean called her out on not having any humanity left.

But, like with everything else in this show, nothing comes easy. The shadow/empty had come back from the nothing, hell bent on collecting Jack for itself. And honestly, I feel silly for not realizing last week just who it was. I guess I am still holding out hope Lucifer will make his return. But, I digress. Once again the angels suffered as the shadow/empty came and killed most of what little angels were left. Heaven is now seriously suffering in terms of numbers.

On the upside, Jack was able to recognize he was in Heaven and finally got to meet his mother. A reunion that was short lived, as Castiel was able to barter to get the shadow/empty to take him instead of Jack thus allowing Jack to return to Earth alive. But of course, there was a catch, it would be on the shadow/empty’s terms. Castiel has no idea when it will come calling, as it wants nothing more than to see him suffer. I’m hoping it will give him enough time to come up with a plan because Supernatural without Castiel would be the worst.

I was happy to see that both Lily and Castiel’s sacrifices weren’t in vain. Cas was able to get the location of Michael which is huge, even if they don’t have dark Kaia or the spear. And Lily was granted entry to heaven where she is to be finally reunited with her daughter. My worry is, how long are Cas and Jack going to be able to keep Castiel’s sacrifice a secret? I mean, sooner or later he’s going to be taken to the nothing and there is no way the guys are gonna let that happen without a fight.

I am hoping that somehow, someway, Castiel will be able to get Michael to take his place in the nothing, therefore killing two birds with one stone. But that’s going to take some serious work to make that happen.

It seems like next week we will finally be seeing Michael again, so things should be getting pretty crazy. It would be nice to see Jack with his powers again, but I guess we will have to wait and see. I mean he did take the grace before he died, so I’m not sure how that would work upon his resurrection. The spell took his soul, not the grace he ingested. So, I’m anxious to see if that will have any impact on the fight that is about to go down. I feel like we have been waiting for this for a long time. And next week being the mid-season finale, it should be good.
