Supernatural - "Ladies Drink Free" - Season 12 Episode 16 Review

April 1, 2017

The similarities between the British Men of Letters and The Winchesters are more prevalent in this episode, in one aspect anyways. They both muck things up a little more than they intend before having to fix things. We see Mick doing just that with the whole werewolf situation in this episode. We know the British Men of Letter’s have a kill policy in place for pretty much everything they come across. So it’s no surprise, it’s the same with all werewolves. So, seeing Mick instantly want to kill off the girl who is turned after her brother was killed... not surprising. It was nice to see Dean confront him about it, but it’s sad that he thought his friend (from a previous episode who was going off to start a new life) had lived. But as we know from that previous episode, the BMOL assassin Mr. Ketch, had already taken care of her the same day Dean helped her.

So, it was a tad bit concerning to see Claire show up in this episode. We know Mick would have killed her after she was bitten, had it not been for Dean. But, it was nice to see Mick chose instead to help with an antidote from a study that was done previously. And, even if for a second, she may have appeared dead, Claire survived it. Which, was good considering the odds were against her. The study had poor results with only one of ten surviving it. So, I guess that explains why she’s a hunter: they all have lives like cats.

I have to say though, it was kind of disappointing when they revealed the werewolf’s motive for killing the kid, and turning the girls to begin with. It was some sappy love thing. A teenage crush, that became an obsession, amplified by the fact, he is a werewolf. Or should I say, was a werewolf? Because as we saw, Mick killed him. Which was lucky timing too.

But, if I am being completely honest, there wasn’t much to hold my attention this episode. Yet again, we are not getting any answers about this pending cosmic threat lingering overhead. We had no Castiel, no Mary, and no Crowley. It almost felt to me like a filler episode, if I am to be frank. I sincerely, for whatever reason, couldn’t really get into this episode. I found myself almost bored by it. I tried, for the sake of knowing I was to write about it, to pay attention. But I found my attention drifting other places. There really wasn’t too much we haven’t already seen in the previous 11 seasons of this show.

I feel like, at least for me, there are always a few episodes in each season like that for me. We find ourselves sitting, waiting for the next big storyline to unravel, and we get disappointed when have to sit through these generic case episodes in the process. I can’t be the only one who feels that way, am I? I mean, there really wasn’t anything that happened in this episode that had anything to do with the bigger picture. Claire being in the episode didn’t bring much more than, perhaps, nostalgia from the past seasons. I haven’t much else to say, other than, I hope next week tops this week. I was disappointed I waited weeks for the show to come back for this lackluster filler.
