Supernatural - "Ladies Drink Free" - Season 12 Episode 16 Review

April 1, 2017

The similarities between the British Men of Letters and The Winchesters are more prevalent in this episode, in one aspect anyways. They both muck things up a little more than they intend before having to fix things. We see Mick doing just that with the whole werewolf situation in this episode. We know the British Men of Letter’s have a kill policy in place for pretty much everything they come across. So it’s no surprise, it’s the same with all werewolves. So, seeing Mick instantly want to kill off the girl who is turned after her brother was killed... not surprising. It was nice to see Dean confront him about it, but it’s sad that he thought his friend (from a previous episode who was going off to start a new life) had lived. But as we know from that previous episode, the BMOL assassin Mr. Ketch, had already taken care of her the same day Dean helped her.

So, it was a tad bit concerning to see Claire show up in this episode. We know Mick would have killed her after she was bitten, had it not been for Dean. But, it was nice to see Mick chose instead to help with an antidote from a study that was done previously. And, even if for a second, she may have appeared dead, Claire survived it. Which, was good considering the odds were against her. The study had poor results with only one of ten surviving it. So, I guess that explains why she’s a hunter: they all have lives like cats.

I have to say though, it was kind of disappointing when they revealed the werewolf’s motive for killing the kid, and turning the girls to begin with. It was some sappy love thing. A teenage crush, that became an obsession, amplified by the fact, he is a werewolf. Or should I say, was a werewolf? Because as we saw, Mick killed him. Which was lucky timing too.

But, if I am being completely honest, there wasn’t much to hold my attention this episode. Yet again, we are not getting any answers about this pending cosmic threat lingering overhead. We had no Castiel, no Mary, and no Crowley. It almost felt to me like a filler episode, if I am to be frank. I sincerely, for whatever reason, couldn’t really get into this episode. I found myself almost bored by it. I tried, for the sake of knowing I was to write about it, to pay attention. But I found my attention drifting other places. There really wasn’t too much we haven’t already seen in the previous 11 seasons of this show.

I feel like, at least for me, there are always a few episodes in each season like that for me. We find ourselves sitting, waiting for the next big storyline to unravel, and we get disappointed when have to sit through these generic case episodes in the process. I can’t be the only one who feels that way, am I? I mean, there really wasn’t anything that happened in this episode that had anything to do with the bigger picture. Claire being in the episode didn’t bring much more than, perhaps, nostalgia from the past seasons. I haven’t much else to say, other than, I hope next week tops this week. I was disappointed I waited weeks for the show to come back for this lackluster filler.

Supernatural - "Alpha and Omega" Season 11 Finale Review

May 27, 2016

Source: The CW

God’s spark is fading, everyone is feeling defeated and now it looks like Amara has also caused the Sun to die leaving all life on Earth to follow suit. What a way to start to the finale! But a positive in all this, Cas is back in control of his vessel! And in typical Dean fashion, he just wants a beer. I’m sure I would be reaching for booze too if I was sure the world was about to end.

And it looks like Amara isn’t the only one they need to worry about. There is a woman in London with full understanding of what is happening with the Sun, and she has “Wanted” posters plastered with The Winchesters’ faces, and she’s headed their way.

Source: The CW

Sam and Crowley seem like the only two willing to try and fight, both agreeing Amara needs to die. With God dying, killing her is the only way to maintain balance. And God finally reveals her weakness, light. Which makes sense since light drives out darkness. The only problem is he would need 10,000 suns set to supernova. And considering he is weak, I am not sure he could muster that kind of energy. But, they might be onto something. One soul is equal to 10 suns, so if they can gather enough souls, maybe they can stand a chance? Or at least I am hoping so. Crowley agrees to “raid hell” for souls, Castiel says he will ask the angels, and Sam and Dean are going to try a sanatorium filled with ghosts. There is no way this will backfire. (Note the sarcasm)

Source: The CW

Armed with a crystal and a magic word from The Book of the Damned, after little struggle, they trap the ghosts’ souls in the crystal. Little do they know, Billie the reaper was there to see it all go down. When they get back to the bunker Castiel tells them that the angels refuse to help, they know God is dying and they don’t think they stand a chance. They decide to close off Heaven and die with dignity. Crowley’s news isn’t much better, his demonic pals raided his stash of souls already. As they are coming to terms with their potential defeat, Billie walks in. She is willing to help, and as a reaper she has access to millions of souls I’m sure.

Source: The CW

When we see Amara she seems scared, perhaps regretful. She notices how everything she touches, dies. And when an elderly woman joins her and speaks of her own family troubles, you can see the wheels turning. If she’s going to change her mind, she better do it fast. Thanks to Billie they are now armed with hundreds of thousands of souls and they know just who to send in to do the job, Dean. Rowena is going to transfer the souls into Dean’s heart and make him the “soul bomb.” When he gets close, all he will need to do is touch his fingers together. The plan seems simple enough, but I am not too sure Dean will be able to follow through. We have seen countless times where he is weakened in her presence.

Source: The CW

I find it funny given that Amara is God’s sister they would think she wouldn’t sense the bomb in Dean’s chest. And sure enough, she does, all while dropping a bomb of her own. She isn’t killing the sun, it’s dying with God. And once he is gone all will cease to exist, herself included. Dean explains to Amara God didn’t want her dead, that they are family.  Amara calls on God to come to her. She explains she loves him and she knows he loves her, and that what he created was beautiful. And as they join hands, light emerges and the sun becomes stronger again. Amara heals God, leaving the rest of the crew back at the bunker to think Dean set off the bomb. Little do they know God removed the souls from him, and that the mysterious British woman is still headed their way. God tells Dean that he and Amara are going away for a while, and that Earth will be fine, that it has him and Sam to watch out for it. As God and Amara make their exit she tells Dean, “You gave me what I needed most, and I want to do the same for you.”

Source: The CW

Back at the Bunker the mystery British woman is waiting, gun in hand. She quickly sends Castiel away using a sigil before revealing her identity. Toni Bevell, London chapter of the Men of Letters. She has been sent to take him in. The Men of Letters are not big fans of all the messes created by The Winchesters with the Leviathans, The Darkness, and what not. They think they do more harm than good. I mean saving the world on several occasions is all well and good, but maybe they did play a part in the world needing to be saved in the first place. But in this moment, it’s pretty convenient that Sam thinks Dean is dead. At least only one of them will be taken in.

Source: The CW

As Dean tries to find his way back, he hears a woman’s cry and it seems like Amara kept her word. She gave him back what he has wanted the most all these years, his mom. Too bad he doesn’t know his brother has been potentially shot and taken away. Perhaps next season his mom will be helping him find Sam? Looks like we will need to wait until October when it is said to premiere! I know I am excited to see what turns next season takes. It’s going to be pretty hard to top God himself playing a role in the show.

Supernatural - "We Happy Few" - Season 11 Episode 22 Review

May 19, 2016

Being the second to last episode of the season, I was anxious to see how they wrap up this whole Darkness vs God plot. Seeing how the last episode ended with God healing Lucifer after their much anticipated reunion, it seemed fitting that is where we pick up. Lucifer seems annoyed that God even bothered him, considering their history. Luckily for the Winchesters, God blocked Lucifer’s ability to hurt them, as a safeguard, of course. And with Lucifer acting like a spoiled rotten teenager, that was probably a good call.

Source: The CW

We finally get a chance to see what Crowley and his mother Rowena are up to. They are both doing what they do best, trying to work deals to save their own skin. Crowley tries to get the demons on his side, to which they deny him. While Rowena finds another witch to help her, she explains the end of magic is approaching, not just the end of the world.

God finally reveals the truth about Lucifer: he was his favorite. And because of that, he chose to give Lucifer “The Mark.” He thought he was strong enough to handle it. He said because of his poor decision, and the fact it changed his favorite son for the worse, he became sad and withdrawn. He hated that he had to lock Lucifer away. But with his apology, Lucifer is now willing to help. However now they need to build a team that is strong enough to go against Amara. They need to weaken her and lock her away, not destroy her. Because, as God explains, they need to keep the balance, her being the yin to his yang and all.

Source: The CW

I was excited to see Castiel come out to plead with the angels to help. He is my favorite, and I have missed him while he has been locked away while Lucifer has taken over. Dean went to speak to Crowley, and with God’s protection Sam was sent to Rowena. Considering they both will want to live to see another day, I can’t see these two not be willing to help lock away Amara. She is after all the one thing that seemed to scare Rowena.

As I predicted, leaving the new prophet behind was not a good idea. Amara has found him, and has beaten him up pretty severely. And when he refuses to tell her about God’s whereabouts she steals his soul, and takes the information right from him. Amara finds herself in the middle of the Men of Letters bunker surrounded by sigils and I hope this is all part of their plan to trap and weaken her. With only 15 minutes left, I can see this ending in a cliffhanger, leaving us to wait to see the battle of light and dark until next week.

Source: The CW

When their plan is finally revealed I can’t be the only one who is nervous right? I was with them for their whole Angel, Demon, Witch fighting Amara part, however I am not so sure about Sam wearing “The Mark”. I get that Dean has a weakness for Amara and subconsciously doesn’t want to hurt her, but come on! Do they not remember how weak and broken he was from his time in the cage with Lucifer? Amara is a whole other level of evil, how do they expect him to handle all that comes with facing her and wearing “The Mark”?

Rowena goes first by contacting Amara via Astral projection. She then leads her to where God is. With a false sense of security, Rowena tries to tell Amara she betrayed God for her. Amara then confronts her with the truth; that she knows it’s a trap, but she doesn’t care. She just wants the time to fight her brother, as she has been waiting to do. I cringe as I see Rowena’s magic fail to help against Amara, and hope the next line of defense will come soon. And then it comes, the rest of the coven backs her up, for all of 5 seconds before becoming extra crispy. Just when Rowena fears her time is done, the clouds part. It’s the Demons’ turn to weaken Amara.

Source: The CW

As a battered, weakened Amara stumbles into where God, Lucifer, Sam and Dean are waiting, Dean seems to want to run to her side and comfort her. His pull to her is still too strong. Then she sees him, her brother, God. As she is making her way to him to confront him, Lucifer stabs her with an ancient spear. As he goes to stab her again, God stops him and apologizes to her. Amara confronts him with her truth. She tells him that he couldn’t handle having an equal, he locked her away so he could be the head guy in charge. And that he created the Archangels to create lesser beings so he could feed his ego, all of which God does not deny. And judging by the look on Lucifer’s face, this is all news to him.

Source: The CW

As Amara begs to be killed, it’s obvious the pain it brings God. But something tells me, it’s not what she really wants, but I could be wrong. As “The Mark” is being transferred to Sam, Amara freaks out. She does not want to be locked away again, as death is a much better fate. She steals “The Mark” back and has God by the throat. She asks, “If you won’t change why should I?” A question I had been wondering myself this season. Dean pleads with her to let God go, and she looks like she may debate it, but the pain she has goes too deep. In a flash of light, God’s vessel crashes to floor. Can God die? According to Amara he can, and he is. He will soon fade to nothing, but not before she makes him watch her destroy the world he created and loved so much. Let’s hope there is something in Rowena’s book of magic that can help. I can’t wait to see how this all plays out next week!
